In our sixth and final episode in season three of HOKA One One Top Trails, we visit Syracuse, NY.  Here, HOKA runner and former Syracuse University runner Martin Hehir takes us to his old long run spot, Green Lakes. Green Lakes is a state park east of Syracuse which features a large network of various trail types as well as the beautiful and rare meromictic lakes which are strikingly green in color. Martin discusses his decision to attend Syracuse University, running on a national champion Cross Country team, and pursuing his dream of becoming a physician while continuing to run professionally.
After the run, Martin and host Ian Terpin make a stop at Martin’s favorite post long run spot, Mothers Cupboard and Fish Fry Diner. Martin tells Ian that while he was running at Syracuse, the team would often eat there after their long runs, and would even bring their conference and national championship trophies in with them. Mother’s Cupboard has various photos and posters of the Syracuse team hung up inside.
Later, Michele Maciejewski (Fleet Feet Syracuse) takes us for a run on the trails in Baltimore Woods near her place in Marcellus, NY, a small town southwest of Syracuse. Michele discusses how the birth of her daughter impacted her drive toward running, and also balancing training, work, and being a mother. She mentions that the community of runners in Syracuse is vital to maintaining focus through the harsh winters. Martin also discusses how he and the Syracuse team were able to continue training with snow on the ground.
